Yet another list of the "worst places to retire to for something or the other." This time it's for taxes. Makes me glad I escaped Oregon but doesn't surprise me since it was one of the reasons I left there.

Well, at least California was number 7. Six states were rated worse. Small consolation, of course, but so many folks talk as if California were somehow in league of its own, which is simply not true.

I agree with you - STILL another "best of/worst of" article.

No surprises on that list; however I really wonder how it would vary based on your income level in retirement.

Having somewhat pinko socialist leanings, I wouldn't mind living in a high-tax state as long as it provided me (and people I care about) with good benefits. California taxes aren't as dire as they're often made out to be. Benefits - meh! The best benefit I can think of is the weather, and my taxes aren't going towards that.

My mother always wanted to retire back to Vermont. It was only after I got older and started researching tax friendly places for retirees that I discovered Vermont is not retiree friendly. When I told her about this she was a bit peeved with herself for not doing the research. But her goal at the time was to go back to idyllic Vermont. Not just unfriendly with the taxes, it is not an inexpensive place to live in general.

Well, it is kind of the 800 pound gorilla just due to its size and population.

No 10-best/10 worst states has ever been on my list for veracity anyway, including this one. Too many variables and opinions.

Migrating anywhere that you had to pay income taxes would be a serious barrier to me.

The same goes for high property taxes.

I am on the fence about this list. For example, PA is supposed to be wonderful for retirees. Yes, they don't tax SS. BUT the COL and other taxes are so high I don't know how retired individuals make it. I haven't found a major homestead relief tax and the money we residents earn from gambling revenues is a joke. PA seems to provide great service for retirees but the lifestyle one would lead is bleak - constantly hovering on the border of homelessness.

I may be wrong but I am taking many factors into account other than tax credits on income and such while making my relocation choice. Change is a factor. How will a major boom and/or state politics affect future COL?

I don't put too much stock in the rankings in these kinds of lists, but read every one I come across just to file away more information (though I'm on information overload).

This one I will use cynically, as I'll share it with MrMontanama in my ongoing campaign to leave MT in retirement, or sooner .

Not forever; it's a lovely place to visit.

Thanks for the link.
