In my earlier post I said $2.65 at my first job but that was a senior moment; it was $1.65 back then...

13 - Dairy Queen. $1.10/hour

My parents told me I was "not going to lie around all summer." I worked every summer after that until I graduated from college. I found I enjoyed having my own money and working, and never looked back. I learned about money, how to write checks, how to save, about delayed gratification, etc. The lessons were invaluable.

I was fortunate enough to be able to retire 3 years ago at age 52, and am loving every minute of it!

Great thread. Made me think.

17 - Restaurant dishwasher/odd jobs after School. Senior year HS. Learned how to make killer mashed potatoes from the cook, Beverly, who easily was the most foul mouthed person I ever met.
17 - Summer job as janitor at a VFW. I quit that job. Couldn't handle cleaning the bathrooms. Grossed me out. Thought I could do better.
17 – Summer job working on a Dairy Farm haying and doing chores. Worked hard all summer. Didn't make much money but learned a lot. Ate at their table and they ate good! Funny though. They didn't drink milk...
18 - Produce assistant at a P&C Food market. Worked there 3 years and did OK. Pay was good but couldn't get full time hours. Left that job for a better one.
20 – A Machine shop. Surface grinder operator. 2nd shift. Decent pay w/benefits. Laid off after almost 2 years.
22 - Ithaca Gun Company <1 Yr. 45 mile commute. Barrel department building shotgun barrels for piecework. Worked hard made great money. But quit when company started having financial issues.
23- Back to the machine Shop again for almost 2 more years. Surface grinder operator. 2nd shift. Worked hard. Got laid off anyway.
25 - Universal Instruments Corp. Great place to work and learned everything I know about Quality Assurance there. Great pay/benefits. Profit sharing, 401k. “Downsized” after a 25 year career there.
51 - NLX/RCSTS Quality Assurance Inspector. For a company that built Flight and Maintenance training simulators. 9 years and laid off when company closed local manufacturing. Great job, great people but very stressful.
60 – Machine and Welding shop, Quality technician. Terrible working conditions. Held out for a month. Finally resigned. (I am getting too old for this.)
61 – Signed up with a Temp agency. Worked in a warehouse in the shipping department. Easy low stress work.
61 - Got a nice Contract job as Quality Inspector doing 3rd party inspections for a medical instrument manufacturer. Lasted all summer.
62 - Back to the Warehouse through the Temp agency.
62.5 Retired, 401K, pension, savings, SS. Still working off and on for the temp agency and seeking more contract work .

Life is good

I had a paper route at age 10, but got my first real job at 14. I was peeling potatoes and cleaning tables at a Fish & Chips shop for $1.75/hour, in 1966. When I got my license and needed more money to buy a car, I took a second job repairing department store mannequins, which even back then paid $5/hour and taught me skills that I use today with various hobbies. When I moved out and got an apartment in my second year of college ($150/month rent) I took a job as a clerk in a liquor store for $3/hour, and stayed at that until after graduate school.
