I met my daughter for breakfast yesterday. When it came time to leave a tip for the waitress, I only had $1 bill on me so I was going to dig out another dollar in quarters. My daughter told me, "Don't do that. That's just rude!"
Now I know that leaving a penny is rude. But since when is leaving silver change as part of a tip rude?
I've never heard of that. Having been a waitress in my first working years, a long time ago, I make sure I leave a good tip. It all spends the same and is appreciated.

I don't see anything wrong with leaving change as part of a tip. I have done just as you would have done when I didn't have enough bills to leave as much tip as I wanted. And when you think about it, I am sure the waitress would prefer change than being shortchanged on the tip.
I'm sure she would love the "Change", Odds are at end of her shift, or if its slow, she will count out her change and convert it to paper bills.
Many Restaurants (Small Family Kinds) all-way seem to need change in register, and small bills.
Often while eating I've watched the (Owner??) at the register exchanging coins/large bills with the wait staff for larger bills they have in the registers, as they need them for change.

Nothing wrong with leaving change -- better than nothing.
Don't know how old your daughter is, but there was a time when my daughter found everything I did either embarrassing or rude.
I hope that, if you left only $1 for the waitress, you'll go back to that restaurant and give her the quarters and whatever else additional change you have.

My daughter put out the other singles for the tip.

She's 31 and should be well over that stage in her life, but sometimes I think she's not
I know some people that think tips should be in paper money with no change. I would hope that the wait staff is not that particular and silver would be acceptable.
I leave 4 quarters at times in place of a $1 if I don't have enough of them.
Doesn't phase me..money is money and those 4 quarters is still $1
I agree.
