I would prefer to ignore the trivia and continue to read MadMan's clever, if somewhat acerbic posts. At least I get something (perhaps a chuckle) out of his. I get it that you are offended, but I trust that too will pass.

Of course I'm not, which is why I even noted in my original comment to you that you are free to create thread after thread about whatever you choose. It is also why I didn't complain in your gambling thread about you creating it. However, as I also noted, I, too, am free to create threads here with "retirement" in the title to chat about minutiae. And if such minutiae happens to parody other posters' minutiae....

And I realize you're not the only person with the philosophy that this is an online retirement community and we should be free to discuss any subject that we want to discuss just based on that fact alone. There's even a new thread created to complain about the behavior of department store personnel and the OP specifically stated that she posted it in the Retirement Forum because she's retired and wanted the opinion of other retirees. Using that philosophy, City Data's fora should be delineated by age group or work status rather than by subject matter.

I, personally, think it's ridiculous to post about anything and everything in the Retirement/Seniors Forum just because we're seniors and/or retired (or just interested in those subjects. I didn't post that comment in that shopping thread (or your gambling thread for that matter) because it would be disrespectful to do so.

I created this thread because it's a huge senior pastime, casino trips offered at nearly all the senior centers. Seniors have lots of interest in gambling; I'd like to hear their views.
But that's not what you posted. You wrote that your sister asked you to go to a casino with her, that you abhor them, and then you asked if anyone wins when they gamble. If you created a thread to discuss the phenomenon of gambling as a senior pastime (as you suggest above), I would have had no issue whatsoever with your thread. But that's not what you did. You created a thread specifically to discuss your musings about taking a gambling trip with your sister. The former is worthy of it's own thread; the latter is deserving of parody.

My read of the OP is that it was an intentional parody. While the post might appear funny or witty to the OP and other participants who share the same disdain to the trifling subjects engaged by the 'plebebian' at this forum, I am afraid that some people who shared their opinions then found that they were bamboozled may not be very pleased.

MMoB,
You are certainly entitled to your opinion. It is very generous of you not to post contemptuous remarks in the threads which you disdained. However, IMO, creating a parody thread is not less disrespectful and maybe even more so when other participants were not aware of the intent.

Regarding what subjects should be posted at this forum. If the moderator does not remove the threads, it is up to the forum readers to decide whether to participate. This is a public and not a private forum. We have readers and participants from all walk of life and economic/education spectrum. If you find some threads beneath your intellectual level, you can ignore them and create your own meaty, serious subjects. If some readers find your subjects boring or highfalutin, they can choose to ignore.

Again, it is just how I think and feel about posting matter. I am not judging you or other posters. Carry on!

And had you posted in the chat thread, I would have.
First, I did not say that I abhor casinos, as I have never been to one. I said I abhor "that kind" of atmosphere (smoke, drinks, and whatever else I might have imagined). Obviously, I am open and willing to give it a try, and obviously, the main concern would be losing some or a lot.

Since my sister's "invitation," I am actually intrigued the subject of gambling as a pastime in retirement. I've never done the kind at cards or casinos. I've gambled with other things, like real estate, but never as a direct game in a "place."

You've posted at times about your gambling, and you and others obviously have stories. Never would I have thought you or anyone else would determine any intent (for the thread) other than the subject of seniors in gambling.

As an aside, I just read the obit yesterday of an estranged aunt, an extreme antisocial wallflower who died this week at 96. In her obit one of her interests (we thought she didn't have any) was apparently going with her sisters to the casino into her 90s. Nearly fell over. Most likely these were bus trips from the asst living where she spent her final years.

If you can see around what you thought my intent was add to the discussion of gambling as a senior pastime, if you want.

.
That is most definitely one thing that relates gambling to retirement/seniors.
It seems that buses to the casinos is a staple of senior center sponsored excursions.
In my small hometown it is the only regular one, only beat out in frequency by the grocery store bus.

And I am free to create my own.

Well, not quite my own....
BAM! It dropped!
