32 years of children in the house, now the last one gone. They just drove off in a U-Haul truck. My son 27 years old and his girlfriend 22 who has lived here for three years.

No more kids, I don't even know what to think. I feel happy and sad, yeah? I can hardly even remember what life is like without dependents.

But they leave without debt of any kind as we have been footing all the bills so they could save up their money to start their lives with good foundation. They have jobs and a new apartment to make a new life.

No kids. I can't imagine it. It's only 4:30 but I think I might need a beer. wow

Well, congratulations, I guess. Never had any of my own, and step daughter did not live in the house more than a few weeks.

Actually I had a harder emotional time when daughter first left for college, then when they actually moved out. I guess realizing she was truly grown and would never be there as much...then when son left for college it just wasn't quite so hard to accept even though it was truly an empty nest at that point.

Isn't it true in general that the ties between mothers and daughters are closer and stronger than the ties between mothers and sons? I've heard an old saying to the effect that "A son is a son until he takes a wife, but a daughter is a daughter for life".

Of course there are exceptions, but my observations in life tend to confirm the truth of that old saying.

My first thought was - OK, a whole new chapter in your life but really it's more like a whole new book.

I hope it proves to be a grand adventure for you.

Congratulations! There is hope for us yet, with one left at age 30. We never planned on this, but you never know what surprises life will bring.

Any big life change leaves us lost for a bit when the reality sinks in. You'll shift gears and find the direction you want to go in soon enough. You can sit back, have that beer and reflect on a job well done as a start.

Congratulations on a job well done!
I understand how you feel. I was bereft when my last one left, but you can find consolation in the fact that you don't have to clean up anyone's mess but your own.
I loved to go past my son's old bedroom and see how orderly it was.
