Thanx for starting this thread. I guess my post in the down sizing thread was an inspiration. The day is young so I haven't added anything to my hoard as of yet. But I've been watching antique linens on EBAY, since I love 1940 -50 fruit and flowers, real cotton table clothes. So I may be bidding on one of those. AND.... expected for delivery this week are some amplified external speakers for that cool little record player I bought last week. ROCK ON !!!

i wouldn't call it hoarding because i already downsized from a 4 bedroom house into a studio apartment (and by nature i really do love getting rid of stuff, it just feels so good!)....but i still crave books and learning so this week it was another book by Avraham Greenbaum

The way I understand hoarding .is when one is selfishly grabbing up something ahead of others either to deny others that provision, or to make merchandise of it, for a greater profit.
In business people buy in wholesale and sell at retail to make a profit. No one calls that hoarding but it is.
I think what most of us do is accumulate ,not for profit, but just in the process of life,
We replace things with better things, but hold onto the older things till we are assured the newer will stand up .
I am one of those though that have observed many of the changes through the years ,say in recordings .
I much prefer to see what mode is going to stand the test of time, rather then jump to the latest fad.
I still have 78 RPM records and a wind up player, and a stereopticon, amongst other things.
In practical terms I do have stored food and water in the event of an emergency. I believe it is foolish not to.

I like this thread too! When I retired two years ago my goal was to rid this house of the accumulation it's acquired over the 39 years I've lived here. I had no idea what a chore it would be. I've gone in fits and starts and feel great when I take a carload of stuff to the local charity. But if I spot a garage sale on the way home I undo all my efforts! The TJMaxx Home Goods up the street is responsible for a lot of backsliding too.

My most recent acquisition is a bunch of colored-handle flatware to replace the dwindling set of knives, forks, and spoons that have managed to disappear, break, and get mangled over the years. So I kind of had an excuse to buy it. Not so the tablecloth with seashells printed on it, and oh look, there's one with yellow flowers...

I don't think I'll get over adding to my hoard.

My big acquisition since retirement has been a pair of custom made boots. I spent my whole life in footwear that didn't fit my odd shaped feet. Interestingly, they only cost me $350. If I had known how cheap they were, I would have done it years ago.

I also like to collect antique oil lamps. My wife thinks I am nuts until we have a power outage.

Now I just need to get rid of the 20 years accumulation of stuff stored in the barn.

Five more plastic super market grocery bags.....like I don't already have HUNDRED!

I keep saying I'll get around to a purge, a really good clean out (wow, that sounds like a colonoscopy, doesn't it?)....but it's not bothering me...Lord willing, I'll get to it eventually.

Toddler stuff for the grandtwins - finally took down the cribs, but got beds, easel, paints, craft supplies, fishing poles, binoculars, swim pool, outdoor chairs, water table, sun hats, bathing suits and coverups, kid sunscreen, kid dishware, and the list goes on. Whatever I've managed to give away, it's been a total wash, but it's been a pleasure.

I need to do a thorough cleaning out, my house looks fine until you open a closet, any closet,
or go down to the basement...or out to the 3 car garage, which houses one old non running BMW
and a lot of stuff (I'll put the garage mess on my husband though).....

Both of our flip flops died last week. So I got us some new ones on e-bay. I found oofos to try. They are supposed to be really comfy. Love e-bay!

Oh my, someone really buys old linens on eBay? Maybe I'll try again to sell some. Now, if I could only hope to find someone who would buy old dishes, 1950's snack sets, or even better, Bradford Exchange Rockwell plates!
