HGTV recently had a series on Tiny Houses. When I first saw them, I thought it was crazy. However, after seeing many of them, I decided I would like a stationary tiny house, maybe 400-500 sq ft, with no loft to climb up to.
Zoning laws may restrict the size of houses though, unless you go very rural which wouldn't really work for old age.

That's a decent size. If I lived alone I think it would be ok for me.

How charming! I'd love it as a vacation home for a few nights at a time but I could never live there full-time.

DH & I have stayed in dozens of vacation rentals. This 700-sq-ft house was one of our favorites. We were there for 10 days and never tired of it. It felt quite spacious, has plenty of storage and a full-size kitchen (important to me). If we ever decide to build a house for our old-age, it would be the exact same layout with a different style exterior. Since there's only one large room plus a bath, it would be cheap and easy to build.

Charming indeedy, size is perfect for two, we'd go with cottage decor and although we have a wee bit way to go with teenagers on their way to college still at home, it is never too early to plan ahead., thanks for sharing.

Funny, my first house I ever owned was a 400 sq. ft. beach cottage that was truly a doll house. It was hand-built and solid (still standing and looks the same) and very easy to heat and cool. I never realized I was ahead of the housing "curve" then, but I certainly wished I had kept it!

I think 192 sq. ft. would drive me insane after a while. It would be fine in nice weather, but if it was too hot or cold to garden or sit outside, the place would start to feel like a prison. While I wouldn't want to live in an efficiency--I don't want to look at the refrigerator from my bed--I could live in 400 to 500 sq. ft. if it were designed properly. There'd have to be at least one decent closet, too. Oh, and there'd have to be room for a washer/dryer stack.

I live in a 992 square foot bungalow with a detached 1-car garage. I knocked down walls, vaulted ceilings, and played lots of tricks to make it feel spacious. I'd be fine in 500 square feet of free-standing house if the space were designed properly. The main thing is to avoid cave-like 8 foot ceilings and to have enough glass to let in a lot of daylight.

People do that all the time, its called hunting camp

Seriously I know a couple who bought 40 acre and did this, they put up two. They have 2 kids. And while they have a house in town they spend most of their time out there. Theirs are a bit rough because they don't care about that sort of thing I guss.
