I have to drive to town on a two lane high speed rural highway. Some years ago I tried to pass a truck full of hay bales going 10 miles under the speed limit. There was oncoming traffic but I thought I could make it. The truck driver accelerated to prevent my passing. I dropped back to pull in behind him. He slowed down all the way to 25 to prevent my pulling back behind him. I tried again to accelerate but my car (4 cyl SUV) couldn't do it faster than he could. By then, the oncoming traffic was too close. I slowed down and again he slowed down to prevent my pulling back behind him. I had seconds to decide if I should risk pulling left and probably rolling over, and/or getting hit by an oncoming car. Luckily, the oncoming traffic went onto the shoulder and missed me. So this murderous truck driver could have been responsible for a huge, probably fatal, crash. I was very shaken and when I finally got back behind him, I slowed way down to get rid of him. I hoped someone would pass me and get between us, but no one else wanted to be anywhere near him either! So we all drove slow until we got to town.
Since then I will no longer pass anything but a hay wagon going 15 mph on a two lane highway.
And I have had to drive onto the shoulder more than once to avoid hitting an oncoming passing car. I watch carefully for that situation. Head on fatal crashes are too frequent on that highway.

That truck driver was beyond despicable. I would have tried to get the license number and notify the police.

(BTW, wasn't that a great film? I was pretty young when I saw it, and it left a long lasting impression)

Wow, Bayarea, I too, think that person should be reported. Living in a small town, with many farms nearby, I often am behind slow moving vehicles. They always try to move over as far as possible & signal me to pass when it is clear.

I'm sorry you had that experience. Most farmers are courteous.

I was too shaken to think of that until I got to town and then had no desire to chase after him to get it. I did think about calling 911, but too late to do any good.

Great movie. Trivia time.
That was Steven Spielberg's first.

More trivia --- filmed almost entirely on a stretch of Old US-6 in central LA county ... around Santa Clarita (pre-incorporation) and into Agua Dulce and Acton. Personal trivia, a memory sparked by the scene at the gas station's "desert zoo" - et me a BBQ'ed rattler in the hills near there when I was about 20 or 21 ...
