So basically, along with doing a traditional new start, I left behind as many of the health issues as possible, and reduced drastically what came with me.
Yes, I am planning and hoping to move for primarily climate reasons- there are other reasons, too. Where I am now located it is blazing sun, blue skies and hot from at least June-September. None of these things are good for me.
I have migraines and reverse, sometimes called summer SAD. My belief is that they are interrelated, plus I just don't like it here. I do need the care of a couple of specialists so medical quality and availability are important too.
There are areas of California that I really enjoy, such as Solana Beach, Carlsbad, and San Clemente but I will never be able to afford them. They are also pretty bright but not hot. So, not practical or even the most desirable for me.
I have always felt a pull toward Oregon but have only been there a few times, none of them recently. I am aiming for Salem, Oregon. I've been following the weather and it looks like a good fit for me. I don't know about the medical care there and am starting to research it. I'm also attracted to the relative proximity of the coast which I know will be good for my emotional and mental health.
Sad news today, we just found out that the doctor that we love sold her practice and will be retiring soon. Now there really is no reason to stay in Texas.
We moved from NJ to upstate NY when we retired. Still go to NJ (3 hours) for most of our medical as the facility we deal with are fantastic (Summit Medical Group). They have every type of specialty doctor in a campus setting in Berkeley Heights. We communicate through emails, which are answered by the doctors within hours. We spend 4 months a year in the FL Keys and I can vouch that there is a total lack of doctors there. Try and find one after Thursday. ER is your only option.

My doctor retired last month, too. On top of that her practice is merging with another, with fewer total doctors and more patient load. I have not met my new doctor.
I expect my health to improve come December when I retire. Instead of being desk bound, I'll be active. Riding my bike. Skiing. Joining a health club. I'll have time to get fit. Use it or lose it.

The Keys are remote, tourist areas. You'll probably fine the same thing anywhere in the middle of nowhere.

Just curious if you rent or own in the Keys? My husband and I live in NJ, too and we are trying to make the snowbird versus permanent move to one place decision. Some say snowbirding is easier if you don't own two homes.
Back to the subject at hand, pretty much the only criterion I have for a retirement destination is SUN. (The warmth will naturally follow.) While I am sick of winters and snow for sure, it is the decrease in the sun during the winter that gets to me. The older I get, the worse my SAD gets. I used to pooh-pooh the existence of SAD until it hit me really hard. It took me a couple of years to figure out what was going on. I keep it at bay with a light box, but I want to be where it is sunny (or at least sunnier) in the winter. The first thing I look at when thinking about a retirement city is the number of sunny days the location has.
