My 62-year-old fiancé applied for SS Retirement a week ago as well as benefits for our 3-year-old son.

Yes. My husband applied for his on Jan 4th. I saw the deposit in the bank account before we received the letter - it took about 5 weeks but they sent him a letter explaining the first payment and when he would be receiving future payments.
