I'm 68, 5 accounts at Fidelity, 2 Banks account, 2 credit cards, and I function very well without having to pay Verizon 100/month to data, or text someone that I'm on my way or whatever you all spend all your time texting about. Tne computer system in my home I built, serves more than I need, and more than your little pad in your back pocket.
The person at SS, who says they can erase your password from your computer, is a complete idiot, unless you have given them complete access to your computer, so they can use it like it was theirs in their office. Try to hack into mine, to erase something, I dare you to try, waste your time.
To the one talking about the letter, and following directions. I received no letter, just an email. Today is July 31, NOT August 1. I tried to take care of this today, their system can't even send a text message to 2 different phones (mine and wife), that have text ability, of known quality. So much for that.
How about being educated, this should have been easy. Allow users to log into their account, setup a one time code, changeable by them, log out of their account, and bingo, they have the security your trying to shove on us, PLUS I'm the only one who knows the code, and you don't have my cell phone number which you DON'T need.
Geezz, this is not rocket science. Stop trying to be my big brother, your not.
Well there were two of us who mentioned that SS asks for a new password every six months so that makes two of us "idiots." LOL. I never said SS can erase anything. You sound as if you just don't get it so I'll just leave it at that. When people stoop to name calling they no longer exist for me. You are now on my ignore list.

It could also mean that your password can't be automatically saved, so you can just log in automatically.
Most of my accounts ask if you want your " device" to save the user name and password . They warn you not to do this if it is a public computer, device etc.
You don't have this capability with the SSA site. I have an online account with them and I always have to look for my user name and password in my secret squirrel stash of passwords and codes.

I dont have Firefox save any passwords. When I bookmark a site, I type its name and my password in the bookmark description. I do have a printed list of sites/user names/passwords -- but it's two pages long and many passwords have to be changed every few months. For me, typing passwords into my bookmarks saves a lot of time when I want to log into a site.

Well all I can tell you is that the times I wanted to log into SS and more than six months had gone they asked me to create a new password.
I never received an email; and yes, I always look in my "junk" file. Sounds like a real government screwup - so much that I thought it was bogus until I saw all the responses here. Is it possible the emails were sent only to those who had recent contact and not all SS customers?
The government should supply free phones to people who do not have the money if they pass law which people have to pay.........................Like do they get their income tax slips from the account for tax time ?
A caution about the Google Phone number option (we have & use this): if you don't use it often enough, the number expires. No forwarding or new-number referral. At that point, you would be in a bit of Catch-22 on getting your code from SSA (you wouldn't be able to get in to change the phone number) & would have to contact SSA directly. Don't know what the parameters for keeping the number active are exactly, just know that we've had 3 numbers in 2 years.
Every other place that we use has multiple options for receiving a code (text-to-cell, call to phone, email).
Yes, what Google gives, Google can later reclaim. The best info I could find implies 9 months is the inactivity period that triggers a number reclamation. see the following: https://productforums.google.com/for...ce/plyv-PvZxt8
The Federal courts just recently ruled that it is discriminatory to require voters to provide a State authorized photo ID when going to the polls to vote - even though these IDs can be obtained free of charge.
By that measure, doesn't this cell phone requirement discriminate against Social Security recipients? If you don't have a "text-enabled" cell phone, it's going to cost some money in order to comply.
