That statement could be misconstrued. While only a minority of visitors come to Vegas strictly to gamble, a vast majority (73%) do gamble while there. In fact, they spend almost 3 hours/day gambling. It's just that they enjoy other aspects of Las Vegas and come for that purpose.
And if you really believe that millennials don't like to gamble, I invite you to walk through any casino on the Strip after 11:00pm. All of the so-called older generation will be long gone and the tables and slots will be packed with the younger crowd.
I know some "younger" folks that go to Las Vegas several times a year. It is pretty cheap to fly out there from here. And I see their pics on Facebook and get all icky. So many people.
I love the desert, but prefer places like the Grand Canyon. But that can get pretty crowded at certain times of the year too.
As for playing slots, it's like anything else, if you don't like playing don't play. As long as someone does it within their means, who cares?
My retired friends in Vegas take $20 to the casino and play nickel video poker. Sometimes they win, sometimes not, and when it's gone they go home. Been doing that for years.
I'm in Vegas a lot and almost every casino is packed, day or night, and it isn't just retired folks there. The casinos might not make as much of their total revenue off of gaming as they once did, but they're still doing pretty well.
We once had to bail out an older family member who slot-machined away close to $100K in one year. I have to wonder how 'harmless' is the casino-visiting habit of some senior citizens.
Below are links to some articles on senior citizens and gambling
This paragraph applied to our relative who became addicted to gambling after the long illness and death of her husband
Quote:
Fact: a compulsion can suddenly manifest in an older person with no history of gambling. Seniors have special vulnerabilities, like time on their hands, a need to seek relief and distraction from physical and emotional aches, and loneliness. The fastest-growing group of gambling addicts is senior women, many of whom have lost a spouse and may have children living far away. Feeling marginalized by society, they hunger to fill a void. And the gambling marketers have the ticket for that.

This looks like a sensible list of reasons.
It's never actually occurred to me to go to a casino in eight years of retirement so far... the only time I've been in one was the time I went to Las Vegas when I was 24. We were there to see a band, not to gamble, but I think most of us tried at least a few of the games. I probably lost a little money gambling (didn't have a great amount to begin with). But the room, actually a big flashy gaudy suite, cost less than 20 dollars a night and the buffets were all under 10 dollars, so it all evened out for the most part.
My boyfriend at the time was 21 but looked like he was around 13, they probably asked him for ID about 100 times in the 3 days we were there.

Workers at a casino would tell you that the #1 reason people go is for the "rush" of winning .
I worked with a young guy who previously had worked at a casino. I joked about all the attractive women he must have met. ( He was single and good looking )
He stated he could have exposed himself while standing next to women on slot machines and they never would have noticed.
He said they were all in pursuit of the "rush" when their slot machine hit .
My parents go twice a month, usually for 2 days each time. They're always given free rooms, so every two weeks they go up there and play for the day, stay the night, play the next day, and come home. The casinos keep track of how much you've won, and if you're ahead, they want you to keep coming back until they get their money back. For my parents, last year they won about $15k from the casino (a couple Royal Flushs, 4 aces + kicker on video poker, etc) and had a good year. So now they get things in the mail to go back all the time, with free play, usually about $200 a month in free play for the both of them.
So far, my mother is up, but my dad has lost several thousand this year. At any rate, it gives them something to do for a few days each month and they have fun. It doesn't impact their finances in any way.
Probably over the years they earned it! At any rate, its none of your business....don't busy yourself counting other people's money
Oh...I hope you know I was joking with that comment!
I admit, I'm a little jealous of them. My husband and I go to the casinos every now and then and I'm always shocked at some of the folks there (usually older/retired, but not always) feeding $100 bills one after another in their machines. While I pathetically sit there spinning 1 wheel for a penny! LOL
I love the slots. It's easy and for me...entertainment. I go once a year and bring a set amount hoping I'd come out ahead but when I run out, sometimes I hit the ATM.

Oh, for the love of God, don't be so dramatic. Not to mention ridiculous. That's akin to saying that you have a friend who is an alcoholic, therefore anyone who was a glass of wine at dinner is on the road to ruin.
