Why are there so many older retired people playing slots at casinos? (states, years)

Easy entertainment for people who don't have anything better to do. Nothing wrong with that, as far as I'm concerned.
Do people go to movies because they don't have anything better to do?
Do people go to the park because they don't have anything better to do?
Do people go to watch sporting events because they don't have anything better to do?
Why can't people understand that going to a casino is just another form of entertainment that some choose to do because they find it enjoyable? They don't do it just because they have nothing better to do.

You know, I was going to write a cogent, reserved, logical and compelling rebuttal in an attempt to explain to the writer why she is wrong, but then I realized that it obviously would be a complete waste of time in this particular instance to do so.

Every person I know who brags about their casino winnings are just covering up their casino losses.
That is what I think - why go if you don't want to win?
And smoking? No thanks. And indoors all the time. I like the fresh air and sunshine.
I just think of the ladies from my small town that go. Not much money and church goers. I always thought if you went to church - gambling was a no-no. But no - they will hop in their cars and go to a casino about 100 miles away along the border of south texas. I forget what it is called.
But get them to do something at the church they attend? NO. I just don't get it. The priest is always looking for help. He tries to wrangle me in - lol. Nice guy. His congregation has their priorities reversed.
I'm not a church goer myself, but if you are going to be a member of something, give it 100%.
I don't care how cheap it is to go, around here the people I see going, should not be spending even 5 dollars there!
Just a pet peeve of mine. Sorry.
I don't understand. And why do you care if someone spends their $5.00 "there"? Are you against them playing Bingo? Card games in their own homes?
If you're not a church goer, how does the priest always try and wrangle you in.
And even people who are against gambling admit there's nothing that historically says it's "a no-no".
Since you used the term PRIEST? Is this a Catholic Church? Because no Catholics care about gambling being potentially non-religious. It's not a Catholic thing.
By the same token, since you don't go to casinos perhaps you don't know about them either. Oftentimes you can go and it won't cost you anything after the comps.
Atlantic City used to give you free bus, free buffet meal and $25.00 just to go down there.
Of course not everybody who goes to casino is a gambling addict. It is dramatic when it happened to someone close to you.
We were not aware of my relative' gambling problem until she gave us a panicked call after signing a bad check at the casino. For several years, we only heard about her big slot machine wins and never once about any losses. We thought it was a harmless way to divert herself from life's problem until we found that she was $20K in debt risking losing her home for unpaid property taxes.
We were also astonished to learn that she blew through almost $100K just in by playing slot machines! This happened to someone who was a responsible, thrifty and hard working person!
Problem gambling in older adults is certainly not an epidemic, but the problem is there and should be recognized at least by the families of addicts or potential addicts.
Did your relative have addictive personality before?
You're saying she was perfectly normal? Probably not since you said "diversion from life's problems".
I don't know a single person in my entire life who became addicted to gambling, even though I know that there are some cultures more prone to gambling alot ...like Greeks.

The priest tries to wrangle me in because even though I do not attend, I still help as needed. Which is why I wonder why the gamblers have time to go to the casino but not help at the church.
Oh...I hope you know I was joking with that comment!
I admit, I'm a little jealous of them. My husband and I go to the casinos every now and then and I'm always shocked at some of the folks there (usually older/retired, but not always) feeding $100 bills one after another in their machines. While I pathetically sit there spinning 1 wheel for a penny! LOL
I know the feeling! I'm a high-roller if I spin the nickel machines

A non sequitur that has absolutely nothing to do with the subject being discussed, which, in case you're having difficulty following, is why seniors go to casinos for entertainment. Here, let me simplify it for you: Winning or losing is not relevant to the question. What is the difference between someone deciding to have fun by going out on the town (movie, or show, or baseball game, nite club, etc. ) and spending $100; or, someone deciding to have fun by going to a casino and spending $100 gambling?
This all comes down to some people enjoying gambling and the overall atmosphere of spending time in a casino, and others who think it is stupid so they have to find ways to denigrate those who do enjoy it.
