Unfortunately I tend to have many transplants as renters....

They lease for a year while solidifying their plans... each has offered to buy the home but it is not for sale as it is suppose to be my retirement home.

As best I know... all have bought and put down roots in Washington State and many have come quite a distance to get here... so there are definitely areas with inward migration.

I only wanted to live on MDI. Other parts are nice, and I visited them. But only MDI spoke to me. I now have a bumper stick on both cars that says: "not on vacation".

We've been visiting the same town as we eventually bought our lot in for years, and have friends there already.

one of the problems in the area we bought in when we had the pocono home was the local ski area went belly up the year after we bought .

it devastated local business's and they never recovered . we sold our house in 2012 to someone else for the same price we paid for it 5 years earlier . they in turn sold last january for more than 60k less than they paid

That's a shame. I suppose there is no way to predict such things happening.
Since I'm planning my next home to be my last, I'm not really concerned about it appreciating or decreasing in value. It's not a tourist destination by any means. The town has been there for 200 years and nothing changes very quickly. The currently home appreciation rate is only about 1% a year which is good for me because home values now will be about the same as when I will be purchasing in 3-4 years. It's fairly rural and just below mountain foothills with a river running through it.

some things to think about are whether or not :

you have lots of public transportation if you can't drive

choices is specialists and facility's

things to do day in and day out . our walk in the woods or around the lake grew old awfully quick.

pretty soon we exhausted most of what there was to do in the area and were bored within 5 years .

if you had to work or wanted to work can you get a decent job for more than low wages

is family near you if you or them need long term care .

there are lots of other things we realized are going to be very important and we lacked just about everything on the list that we would require at some point if we made a long term commitment.

there was a reason life was cheaper in the area , but cheaper and more rural is not always a good thing . compared to life in pa nyc is well worth it to us .

Some have the ideal work/interests for remote areas and others don't.

Know an author that is very successful... she needs total peace and tranquility to get the creative juices flowing and can live anywhere this is available... for a time is was in the Pacific Northwest with woods and water and long winter evenings.
