Bozeman is a good choice, (Billings gets you closer to Powell / Cody, WY, but is more 'prairie' terrain.)
Columbia Falls, MT and Sandpoint, ID as well, since BC and Alberta are very spectacular for hiking and camping / outdoors stuff.
If you want to be near a metro and / water / islands. NW WA is very nice (accessible from YVR). Victoria / Vancouver Island (Nanimo to Campbell River is nice too!). There are nice places near Sequim and Port Angeles WA that have great access to Olympic National Park, as well as Puget Sound (sailing / camping / water sports)
Portland OR (Vancouver, WA for income tax free) is pretty nice, but can see 100F for a few days in summer. Columbia Gorge is 20 min, mtns (including Volcano) are 40 - 60 min. Coast (generally REAL COOL on Hot summer days) is one hour, and LAS is a direct flight on budget carriers ($40 - $80). No Sales tax in OR (in case you need to buy something, or do your Christmas Shopping). We have never run out of things to do in PDX area, and we enjoy living in Columbia Gorge (federally restricted, no new neighbors allowed), yet 20 min from PDX and 30 min to downtown Portland. Our winter home is a bit far (west of San Antonio / Austin), but rents are GREAT in both places so we keep the main homes rented (on both ends) and live for free in Cabins / guest qtrs. (Actually get PAID to live there, positive cash flows; and trips between are deductible as allowed. for maintaining the props as income. )
You can choose Oregon as long as you don't trigger domicile. Cannon Beach is COOL and very accessible, Ht Hood / ZigZag / Welches, OR are very close to PDX airport and cool in Summer, and VERY rent-able in winter. Sisters, OR would be another 'favorite' but is pretty trendy / subject to summer fires. Come visit this area during Eclipse 2017.
Total Solar Eclipse 2017 - Communities in Oregon! Get a place to stay early!, tho many guest homes have space (including ours).
BTW: consider using Hospitality Guest Homes when researching a place to live, $10 / night with a local host is invaluable.
Most guest home directory / sites also list housesitting opportunities. great way to discover if you like a region
LV is just too brown and hot for DS, but a direct flight between abodes would be NICE.
While you are there (LV), please visit
Valley of Fire (for sunrise and sunset)https://www.google.com/search?q=vall...h=566&dpr=1.25
and the hiking area west of LV. (
