I ask this question, because I am 55 y/o and now I have discounts at many places, that advertise "discount for elderly people", such as McDonalds, Long John Silvers, etc. And just today, I found some apartments for rent, for "elderly" people and the minimum age is 55 y/o.
Kind of weird. I always thought 65 y/o and older is elderly.
Do these places really use the term "elderly"? For 55 years old? I don't think the word has a real definition anymore. If I saw that term for discounts, I'd think these companies were clueless.
I made that big mistake back in my 30s, referring to a 55-year-old hiker as elderly. BAD BAD!
Looking back now from the ripe old age of 61. I don't even know what "middle-age" is anymore.
55 is senior but not elderly. Elderly is not a particular age but more a state of being. It's when you noticeably start to slow down and doing normal things begins to be more difficult.
Some of the newscasters were speculating what Obama was going to do when he leaves the White House. Most of them stated that he's so young. He has so much time ahead of him and he has so many opportunities.
Ha Ha. As we know, the average unemployed 55 year old does not have endless opportunities and in many cases, will find it difficult to be hired because of age.
Then other places you can't get the senior discounts until you are at least 62.
As for the OP question, that can be relative to the other person's age. I'm sure to many under 20, that they probably consider someone 55 years of age as a senior. I remember the movie "War Games" starring Matthew Broderick when he and a schoolmate were going over the biography of the man who came up with the computer system game and I think the age was even younger than 55 and the girl made some remark about that being old.
When my daughter was a teenager she though 50 was old. If you are 55 you probably do not think it is old at all. When you are 65 you will not think that is old. I think the older you get older get farther away.
However, if your health is not good you might feel older at a young age.
