I thought SS was a month behind, meaning what goes in your account this month is actually your benefits for Feb???
Asking because my husband passed away on 03/08 and they did not deposit his amount.
I know I need to actually get in there and speak with a person face to face but had other pressing issues to get to first
Per SSA's info at https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10008.pdf that is how it is supposed to work.
"If the deceased was receiving Social Security benefits, you must return the benefit received
for the month of death or any later months. For example, if the person dies in July, you must
return the benefit paid in August."
You'll need to contact SSA about that, the $255 Death benefit, and Survivor's benefits also.
When my mom died, I called SSA on the phone. Don't remember if they asked for a death certificate, but I did get a very nice "thank you for letting us know" from the person I spoke to.
After my father died, SS stopped his payment and and changed Mom's to the survivor benefit with one phone call from us. We were relieved since the closest office was over an hour away.

So very sorry about your loss.
This is what we were told 4 years ago when H started collecting at full retirement. And we were told this as they didn't want to take money back like the old system. Which is why you had to wait a month.
I would take the time to go to the SS office and talk with them. My big concern is how people get the deceased SS# and open credit accounts. So I'd be looking for advice on preventing this from occurring.
When my mother passed, the funeral director took care of this sort of thing.
