I heard of the flat tire crime, from a couple who had this happen to them. The cops were called by a local who watched it happen and police caught the perps, and they were Colombians. The police said this is one of their tactics, and the police then proceeded to give this couple from Boston a police escort to their destination (they didn't need it, but the cops felt bad)

Some other examples:

An American’s backpack was stolen from a chair at a restaurant while he was in the restroom.

What an idiot. They deserved to lose their backpack for such stupidity.

Items were stolen from the locked trunk of a rental car.

Another "duh", don't leave your stuff in your car overnight!

A purse with a passport and credit cards was stolen out of the overhead compartment of a bus.

And another "duh, probably put it in the overhead compartment and went to sleep.

I'll take Costa Rica over many American locations in terms of safety.

Of course, like anyplace you visit, one should exercise caution and, like we did, survey the neighborhood in advance (by cab, which 7 years ago cost a whopping $1.50 to go anywhere in San Jose) before setting off on foot.

Berchtesgaden, Germany. You can't comprehend why a German-speaking American wouldn't want to retire here?
