I will be retiring in mid-December of this year. My age will be 63-6 at time of retirement. The local SS Office is ~10 miles away so no hardship in making an In-Person appointment.
Is there any significant advantage to applying In-Person, or is On-Line filing nearly the same?

Oh, and to answer the Health Insurance questions that will probably arise; we are currently insured via my wife's employer and that will not change with my, or her's, retirement. Until Medicare at age 65...........
Online is quick and easy. My husband applied at 62 and I applied last month. If you have any concerns or questions when you start the application you can always save it and go back later.
I have to say that I was super impressed with the knowledge and efficiency when I had an appointment at the office.
The wait is quite variable, but for me as well the office is very conveniently located so no big deal. Even with an appointment, I had to wait a bit but it was under an hour and I had the peace of mind that it was all done properly and no missing data.
If you have questions it might be better to go in and see someone. On-line is easy and efficient, so if the projected numbers look good to you, it's fine to do it on-line.
Online is the way to go for anything you can do administratively. There's no benefit to waiting in line for any routine service *if you don't have to*.
I had worked at SSA for thirty years and filed for my own social security benefits online. It was neat.
If you have no issues and no questions file online, otherwise make an appointment and go in person.
Not to hijack the thread, but how about if you will be filing for child care benefits as I currently have a toddler in tow in which I am able to receive benefits for until age 19, correct...?
Also, if my understanding is correct, my wife should be able to file for benefits under my employment record for child care also and there is a total amount for benefits for the family should she do so ?
Would she be able to file for these benefits later instead of at this time and what would be the procedure in order to do so ?

It is so easy on line I would only recommend doing it on line and not wasting time at an office for something so simple.. it literally takes a few minutes
