Follow up closely. It may take a few months to get it correct. Do not assume you will be told the correct information.
I assume you have already filed for medicare part A. If not do it now.

I just did this recently. I filed online to get spousal benefit. A SS rep called me later and asked to talk to my husband to verify that we were married (the date that we were married and where).

I filed for myself on line but all they gave me was that link to print the form and mail.

I called to find out how to do it and then they set up a date and time for them to call both of us and ask a few questions. But like you there was no way to do it only on line. It can only be done on the phone or in person.

My wife will file on her birthday 3/6 at FRA. how long will it take her to receive her 1st check and do they pay for March or April. How long will it take for me to receive the spousal when I file and restrict on 6/3?

Does it make a difference if she files now or wait until her birthday in March?

No, you can apply up to 4 months early.

See https://www.ssa.gov/benefits/retirement/ where it says;
"You can apply online for retirement benefits or benefits as a spouse if you:
  • are at least 61 years and 9 months old;
  • are not currently receiving benefits on your own Social Security record;
  • have not already applied for retirement benefits; and
  • want your benefits to start no more than 4 months in the future. (We cannot process your application if you apply for benefits more than 4 months in advance.)"

Good to know. She will file now then in that case. I will wait a bit until her application clears and then file and restrict and file for 1/2 hers on spousal.

Thank you all for your help.
