Both the wife and I are each pension with survivor benefits and very good SS and we still saved and invested for s multitude of reason. Lots of others do also and we also have fully funded healthcare etc etc and LTCi. You always need liquidity. I responded to you and not the other person to avoid them getting ......

Not every one can move up. It's a pyramid; the further up you go, the less jobs there are. There is only one desk in each fast food franchise and lots of low skill jobs that need to be done. You can have ambition and still not get ahead, especially lately. There are people with degrees working low skill jobs. Not everyone without ambition chooses to be how they are; we are not all wired the same way and we don't all have the same potential.

OP should pay attention to the new president ever 4 years, and time the market around the time the New Pres come to office. Should also pay attention to the young ones in the extended family. Learn what is new ,hot, and in use and just jump on some hunches. You do have to play alittle . 401k, roth IRAs, security blanket savings should always be kept updated.

Long story short, make sure your money will work for you, so you can cash out when it is time. No one wants to be that guy, regretting the would haves and should haves.

making money can depend on your creativity more than skill. it all is about doing the things others can't or won't do .

our cesspool guy owned a multi million dollar company with a grade school education . or many times it just means taking skills you already have , refining them a bit and moving in to new related areas .

some times it means having more than 1 job if need be , giving you money to invest and then letting compounding do its thing .

there are ways but not everyone has the creativity or real motivation and drive to make that money even though the opportunities are out there. where one person sees opportunity another person sees nothing at all.

most Americans just float like a cork drifting in water to where ever they end up , usually one low paying job in to another . others set a course and propel themselves under their own power setting their own course not the tides .

The main reason most workers don't save is they don't have a payroll saving plan. My suggestion: open up the 401k to ALL workers.

I don't have hard numbers, but I would say that there is a relatively thin slice of the American workforce that cannot improve their situation because of some type of mental/physical ability.

Notice I said "improve" and not rich/wealthy. The average low paid worker making $10/hr could work their way up to making $30/hr if they developed a long term career plan and was willing to put in the work.

There is much more choice happening than unsurmountable circumstances.

Spend time on the Employment forum. You'll see quite a few people saying they just need a job that pays $35k-$40k just to "get by." They aren't thinking how their SS will look after 35 "high years" of a $40k salary.

One good thing is that people can see their SS estimate on SSA.gov. If people looked at that at age 30, I'm sure most would get on the ball and make some changes.

it is no different than losing weight . very few have actual conditions that leave them over weight . for most it is they need to eat less and move more .

but there are always going to be loads of people who will find excuses as to why it is not their case .

this is just how life works and there are those who will never see or seize an opportunity because they don't see it or really care to see it if it is not handed to them . kind of like those who complain they can't meet anyone but they never go out to places where you can meet or try on line .. .

Are you sure you have read my posts? I am a 5%er; I have reasonably well funded retirement accounts and will collect the max on SS. It's other people who are not in good shape that I worry about causing the current system to crumble.

Interesting analogy. I just lost 60 pounds...
