I owned one of the first CD players released ..it was early 1980’s and was a philips player marketed under the magnavox name .. it cost me 1k and I had to get it at Macy’s .... there were about 10 cd’s out .. it sounded pretty poor

You're right. It was probably a cassette tape. Memory is tricky.
At the time, Neil Bogart was still the head of Casablanca Records, so it would have been the 1976-1979 timeframe. I remember this because when I asked for a raise in the art gallery, HR told me I had to get approval from Neil.
1976..had just graduated HS.
Looked up the top hits of 1976 and there's just too many to list a favorite.
They were all so good. Just reading the titles brought back a flood of memories.
If I had to pick it would be anything by KC and the Sunshine Band.

The Philips player was worse than the Sony. The Sony used a 16bit DAC, Philips used a 14 bit, and because of the way it was designed, the left/right channels were never quite in sync. The Sony actually sounded quite good, which is why the CD format took off and eclipsed vinyl in just 4 years.
