LOL Now I don't feel so bad. Last year I had an $8 tomato that was the most gorgeous thing I ever saw and huge. Cut it open and there was a big nasty worm in it. I don't know why I expected perfect tomatoes when I live next to a densely treed area with lots of wildlife. Also it's very humid here during growing season. One has to take into account the climate and the zone which I did not do!
Ewwww! That happened to me years ago when I grew broccoli. I brought it into the house to prepare it, and saw green worms the same color as the broccoli all over it. I screamed and threw it all in the trash!
Hello Fresh IS making from scratch. That's the whole point of it.
It's just that the ingredients are provided and measured out for you in the kit, which is an advantage, because there is no waste.
Well, the poster indicated she could cancel the Hello Fresh and cook from scratch, so that's what I was replying to. I've never had a Hello Fresh box, so no idea how it came.
I was speaking of the store bought rotisserie chickens -- we can get them for $6 on Thursday at The Fresh Market -- that's a very good price -- just went up from $5. I will frequently use the meat for multiple days and then if inspired I will make soup from the finished carcass. I love homemade chicken noodle soup, even in the summer.

All of those "meal prep" boxes are hellaciously expensive; not sure what they're even doing in a thread about economizing!
I wouldn't consider the meal order services cost effective, but they can be a good option for some people. Cheaper and healthier than eating out, or people who do not have a lot of kitchen storage.
I really want want to try Daily Harvest though.

And, make and freeze your own chicken (or beef from bones) stock. Or shrimp bisque from shells you saved. These are all wonderful, cheap and no added mystery ingredients/salt. I keep a few 500-ml. bottles (from mineral water) in the freezer all the time. The huge slow-cooker is good for this.
Well, that's why I stock up on Chef Boyardee when it goes on sale, but okay!
There is absolutely no comparison to the health value of the two. Sure I can eat dollar ramen, then pay medically for the damage to my body.

As I posted when I bought some cans a couple of weeks ago for the annual USPS Stamp Out Hunger food drive, Chef Boyardee Beef Ravioli & Beefaroni are only 99 cents at the regular price. Is stocking up when it goes on sale for a few cents cheaper really worthwhile?
