Many less expensive food items and processed food items can be the very worst products for one's good health.

If one is in one's 50's or 60's, it can be a very good goal to protect one's health by eating quality healthy food (at any age actually) -

If one wants to lessen heart disease too - heart disease is the number one killer - and lessen chances of other diseases and boost chances of a long life.

(beans are inexpensive and great for good health)

The hardest thing is the prices of groceries. More than likely we would qualify for assistance but my husband isn't wanting us to apply for them at this time. I went through my banking and just the two of us racked up over $700 just in January for food. We do not eat out. We have a meager fixed income and I was worried about it as we manage backward. I pay all bills with a credit card and pay them off at the beginning of the month. I don't actually have the money in the account during the month but can pay it off when the pension comes. That is what I mean by backward. Adding up the costs actually helped me relax as I see we are making it like my husband said we are.

Just think back to the high inflation of the 80's. How did you exist then ? We all made it this far.
And hopefully we're all in a better place to weather this storm.

Agreed. Unfortunately many healthy or healthier foods are more expensive. I could buy whatever is on sale instead of what I want when I go to the market. For example no more almond butter instead of peanut butter, no more olive oil, no more avocados, buying cheap on sale white bread instead of whole wheat, no more fresh berries, eggs from pasture raised hens. Those things add up fast, but I'm not doing it yet.
BTW, I make my own bean soup not from cans and it's very good.

They hand out free food to anyone over 18 here (it's not needs-based). For that matter, I would probably qualify for meals-on-wheels and a weekly food pantry box if based on my income alone.

Hmmm...

Cut the waste. Learn to handle and save leftovers,

Never touch dairy products with fingers or mouth, nor any interior part of the package. That immediately starts contamination, reducing storage life from weeks to days.

Wholesale prices rise 1% in January, up 9.7% over the past year. The producer price index was expected to rise 0.5% in January, according to economists surveyed by Dow Jones.

I have been turning my heat completely OFF during the night and hunkering down under three blankets, which works as long as they're also over my head, with just a little opening to breathe through, then turning it back on in the morning to warm the house (but only to 60 degrees). I notice instead of cycling on and off all night (which frankly left me a little too warm under the blankets), it runs for about an hour in the morning, instead. So am I actually saving anything on energy costs???

Did you add a second bank? I tried to do that last night and got a prompt to download some kind of authorization, it looked like too much trouble so I didn't bother

Re: the I-bonds, is there a reason everyone mentions $1k amounts? What if you have, like, $500k sitting in banks. Could and/or should you open 500 I-Bonds???
