Gee, that means you could be a spy or start a life of crime with "fingerprints illegible"
That used to happen to my sister. I don't remember why but it was a matter of getting someone who really knew how to take fingerprints (like years and years of experience). She had to get them done a few times for one job.
It wasn't due to aging though ...she was probably in her 40's when that happened.
Me..last time I had them done...I was late 50's and had no issue. Never had an issue with fingerprints needing to be redone.
I'm having it done a 2nd time tomorrow and if it does not work, the FBI does a name search which takes 90 days.
My license for work expires 12/31/2021 and that part would take 90 days for the FBI name search. I would not be able to operate; would have to turn the business over to my son (at least, that is an option).
Trying not to be anxious but this is my livelihood and I need to keep on track otherwise I may not get to retirement.
The old way usually worked (finger goes into ink, then onto paper).
I think they do the same for a passport but not sure. I've never gotten one.
This happened to me after I laid down 10 pallets of pavers. The technician made me use hand lotion called ”Corn Huskers” on my hands and they were finally able to get good prints.
Years ago our state police spent a fortune on an automated fingerprint system with plans to work through a backlog of cold cases. They cranked up the system and waiting for the old case fingerprints to come flooding in. When they did, they were amazed that so many were illegible and poorly taken by the local police. The local officers were not well skilled at taking ink prints so the technology revealed, sadly, that better training years before would have made a difference. Now there are better options and fingerprints are used for mundane things. I got fingerprinted some years ago but can’t remember why.
I got mine done for TSA pre-check when I was 56 and they had no issue reading them. Could be your fingerprints or a dirty scanner. If they can't read them again, ask when the last time the screen was cleaned. With everyone using hand sanitizer and such these days, could have a residue buildup on it.
I had them done for TSA pre-check also, at about age 60. No problems.
