Saw this article today:

Workplace and Employment Age Discrimination and the Baby Boomer | Go To Retirement

I don't know if anyone here was forced to retire at a particular age or tried to find a job after they retired and had a hard time because of age or was subject to a layoff and saw a disproportionate number of older workers let go but this article might help you know the law in each scenario and recognize when age discrimination might be in play.

I'm guessing people who post here would be interested in the parts about being forced to retire or being able to find employment after they retire.

While I am sure those things happen but many employers know the rules. Where I worked they offered everyone who had at least 20 years and was 60 early retirement with a bonus pkg that equaled your salary for the rest of the year. They also gave you an extra amt per month. Of course, Uncle Sam takes almost 50 percent of that.

When asked what would happen if we declined the pkg we were told we could stay as long as we did our job. Yeah right.. I saw them reorganize jobs and then make ppl reapply for the jobs that were available.

They also told us that if we didn't take it now, we would not get another chance to get the extra money, this was a one time offer, a year later they offered made the offer again to others.

The sad thing is a friend who had 3-4 mos before she turned 60 and she wanted to retire. They wouldn't give her the pkg.

It's a real shame...I am so glad I had a 20 year retirement and left when it was time...I ran out of there...even civil service jobs are cutting back and
canceling hiring lists..when will it all end...

I worked to a fortune 500 company and at first they encouraged people who were over the age of retirement to do so. Then they started offering retirement packages to people who were close to retirement, but with this they mentioned that failing to accept the offer might result in a layoff with no benefits or recall. Some sought legal advice and the usual outcome was that lawsuits for age discrimination seldom are found for the plaintiff and even if the plaintiff was awarded a settlement the defendant appealed the decision delaying any pay-out for many years. I had no desire or plans to retire but was forced to do so.
I had a friend who worked for major Japanese company in NJ. After his 58th birthday they called him in a told him they no longer had any work for him. He was fired after twenty years or so of service without anything.
This morning I watched Today Show, NBC, and during the show they panned around the studio set. One thing that stood out like a sore thumb was the absence of seniors in their news rooms. It seems the only place you can find working seniors, and pre-seniors, is Wal-Mart.
