How about Ithaca, NY.
When (s)he says hellish summers, I'm pretty sure (s)he means hellish winters too.

A married couple I know keep insisting that I would love Ithaca. Having gone to college in that area I cannot imagine enduring those winters!

Try Las Cruces, NM. It is in the southern part of the state very gay friendly university town with interests in the arts. Smaller than Alburquerque but larger than Sante Fe. El Paso airport is just 45 min. away. It is not affected by border problems. Low crime and inexpensive. Both Alburq.& Santa Fe get quite a bit of snow unlike Las Cruces. Summer temps do get up in the 100s but only for a few weeks. Most of the time it is mild, breezy to windy, cool at night with 350 days of sunshine. It is also cheaper living and entertainment than Alburq. or SF. New Homes range from $150s on up to the millions with nicely appointed homes in the mid $200s. Ogunquit ME or Provincetown MA - Just kind of wondering why someone is ready to retire in their early 40s.

Here I am in the Triangle of NC which is fairly liberal and gay friendly. In a red state mind you. There is a small town atmosphere in certain ways (the people make it a small town) but decent culture. I'm looking to leave now. I think Rainbow Vision went bust, no? Wish I had answers and hope for some help here :0

My partner and I moved to Albuquerque three and half years ago. We are both retired. We live in a town called Corrales which is just 20 minutes to old town and 45 minutes to Santa Fe. We love Corrales because of its rural atmosphere but with all the amenities of a urban setting... close to doctors, hospitals, shopping of all sorts. There is definitely 4 seasons, but with a "sunny" disposition. If you are looking for a place to stay while visiting Albuquerque we have a large 1250 sq ft guest house for available for short term vacations. This would be good way to explore the area while staying with "family". Good luck to you as you explore....
