1)a farmette with a garden,chickens maybe a horse or
2) getting a low maintenance small house and being free to travel more.
I love the idea of the farm type setting because I have
always enjoyed animals and gardening, but I also love the idea
of being able to pack, lock the door and take off here and there
for a week or so.
It seems like I cannot have both ....
Another thing I need to think about is that I enjoy the animals when
it is a beautiful spring day and I don't have other places I'd rather be
but do I really want to deal with them 365 days a year & when it is cold & rainy ect.
We are a year away from making a decision and hubby thinks we
can have the farm and take off when we want to but I think I am being realistic.
Right now with a cat, rabbit and dog it is hard to leave town.
If you have a hobby farm you cannot just take off whenever you want. Those animals need to be fed and watered every day.
I have some animals (chickens, ducks) and am retiring to a hobby farm I bought.
I do not see it as a job. I've done my traveling and can't wait til I can get some cows and sheep and settle down to enjoying my hobby.
You both have to have the commitment to take care of those animals. If your husband thinks you can just take off and leave the animals, then I don't think a hobby farm is for you.

It's one thing to have a friend drop in to feed a dog or change the kitty litter; but how many friends are going to be willing to do the same for a cow....or two?
Its no different than having pets really has to the holddown they place on you unless you have the money to have someone do the feeding and tending. Most people I have known tend to move from the farm or ranch as they get older; not the opposite.
I am not having any difficulty with this type of decision. I will be getting a camper and plan to do a lot of travel. Unfortunately I still have 3 cats and that may be somewhat difficult. One is very old, but even 2 are more than I want.
I have friends with the small farmette and they really can't travel together much. When they do, they get a trusted friend to do the chores. The person has to know how to do each animal so just anybody won't do. Farm animals do require daily & usually twice daily care. There aren't kennels for chickens, goats, and cows.
Have you considered joning a farm share that allows you do some work in exchange for the produce? That way you can have some of the farm experience without all the responsibility.

I'm a member of the Museum of Appalachia. For one one year membership, I can go as many times as I want for free. I love the chickens but it also has sheep, goats, peacocks and peahens, guinea hens, mules and horses and some kind of cattle roaming the grounds. I also like the birds and squirrels. Sometimes, I sit there for 3 - 4 hours. I live in an apartment complex. The point is, I can be with farm animals and still be free to take off. Look for a place like that and enjoy both.
