Hi Everyone.....my wife and I are moving from NH to RI around Labor day. We have been i n NH (Lakes Region) for 6 year's and need a change. We really want to be near the water. I am from the Westerly area but have not lived in RI now for over 45 years. My wife is from Ct. The question for us is what town to move to. Since I have been away for so long, I am no longer in touch with what is going on and conditions in the various towns. We are an older couple and would like a small, vibrant community with good restaurant's and a safe and secure feeling. Being near the water is essential. We have decided already to stay away from Newport, Little Compton, Middletown, Portsmouth becasue of the very high cost of living (apt's and houses) in those towns. I am interested to hear from fellow Rhode Islanders and your opinions.
There really is no "low cost of living" near the water...unless you'd find acceptable a few pockets of older beach cottage communities (small to tiny houses built on tiny lots) which have attracted a low income year round crowd such as Bullocks Pt in East Prov, Oakland Beach in Warwick, and Island Park in Portsmouth. Frankly, I would not recommend any of these areas.
You could look in various other communities in South County a couple miles- say- to water, such as Westerly. Or the East Bay- Bristol or Warren. Parts of the West Bay inc. Warwick such as Pawtuxet Village, Riverside in East Providence. There are also ponds and small lakes in Glocester & Smithfield.
It would take a fair amount of looking to find an acceptable socioeconomic neighborhood near the water. Half of RI'ders are looking for the same thing!
yes, Bristol has cought my eye as a very stable and charming town. do you agree? I was only down there for a week but it seemed to be walkable and safe and clean. and of course, on the water .
Anyone know about Pawtucket as it is said that they have gone through a revival of sorts, artsy type area's and cultural kinds of stuff. The Blackstone river sounds interesting with a lot of old mills being converted into loft apartments and loft condo's. Anyone know about this?
Pawtucket does have a lot more loft-living options than it DID, but it is confined to a relatively small area of what is comparatively much larger. The buildings *are* quite charming, yes, and if you are into the loft community there are many options. I think, however, that the revival has slowed a bit due to the real estate market (upmarket living space here is still as costly as one would expect yet there just aren't the upmarket tenants for it).
I think the thing to consider with Pawtucket's loft community is access to services. It isn't like Providence's downtown with a lot of options as far as walkable access to shops and nightlife and such. It does have *some*, but the choices are few and far between.
