I'm trying to do some research on private medical insurance in Rhode Island. I've been offered a full-time job but medical coverage is not included. I'm now trying to weigh the options and find out what a single person like me can get for medical coverage and how much it would cost. That would help influence my decision and formulate a plan.

Can anyone venture a guess as to how much Private insurance would cost (ballpark) for a single and fairly healthy person?

It's tough to do -- or, if you go to Blue Cross, it's expensive. I've had a string of "short-term" (6-month) policies through Assurant -- with a high deductible ($5,000), it's not too bad, around $250-300/month for a couple in our late 40s. But one provision of the federal health care "reform" bill is that they can't give you more than, I think, two years' consecutive "short-term" coverage. I guess Congress was trying to discourage it, so they wrote it into the bill. I don't know what they're expecting us to do -- they take away our short-term coverage but give us nothing in return.

It stinks -- getting individual health coverage at any kind of reasonable price is tough. I ended up going to HCC Life STM (short-term medical), which ended up costing about the same as the Assurant policy I had -- but that's with a $7,500 deductible and it only pays 80% after that. I think I set it up through ehealthinsurance.com. Better than nothing, if one of us goes into the hospital... but I sure hope we don't....

Thanks for your reply urbie. I've spoken to BCBSRI on the phone and the sales person quoted me a price of $189/mth and dental coverage at a flat rate of $37/mth. They're gonna send me some information via snail mail to explore my options. After looking up numerous things, this might be the most viable option for me.

Contacted ehealthinsurance.com was told they don't offer individual coverage.
