My daughter, a high school junior, is planning to do a summer internship in the Navy base at Newport, for 8 weeks, Jun ~20 to Aug ~18. My wife will be staying with her. They will be coming from California and would prefer to not rent a car. They are looking to rent a studio/small apartment in a SAFE neighborhood. So far we have not succeeded - maybe because we don't know where to look. The best we have is the U of Rhode Island in Kingston, offering a 1-bedroom apartment for about $150/week and wife thinks it would work out because there is a bus (#64, I think) from URI to Newport with about an hour commute each way. I was hoping to find something closer, perhaps in Newport itself, but in what little searching I did, I found very few choices and often the rent was very high - $2.5K+/month perhaps because the rental houses were enormous. Any suggestions welcome. If you name specific apartment complexes that are within walking distance of public transportation, I will be grateful. Thanks.

Newport is a resort area in the summer. You will not find low priced accommodations there. It is also an historic city and there are few to no apartment complexes of the type you mean.

Presumably you've tried a few realtors to see if they have any condo or private listings for rent that are not heavily advertised- but nothing will be cheap.

Best bet is to get a car- suggest you look at Portsmouth, Middletown, Warren, Bristol, and East Providence for rentals. Commutes from these areas would be in the 15-25 min range. But your biggest problem will be the short term nature of her internship. You sure the Navy can't help with housing? They do have base housing.

The towns Holly mentions would be better suited for a commute to the Naval base. I'm not sure how well they will do without a car for the summer. Even if your daughter can get to her internship what about groceries and the like and what will your wife do all day? I suppose it's possible to rely entirely on the bus system in Rhode Island, but it certainly isn't ideal. So you may want to look into options.

I would also check Military by owner, the sublet section of craigslist, and the Salve Regina and Roger Williams University sites for sublets. With a short term lease a sublet is probably your best bet.

Called a bunch of apartment complexes in Newport, Portsmouth, Bristol etc but no luck - nobody will agree to a lease of less than a year. Have started looking in craigslist but no concrete leads yet. Hoping the the URI Kingston apartments are safe - as it looks likely that we will end up there. I checked online for safety characterization and one of the sites gave it a D but then site gave many other universities a D also.

Well, once settled, I'm sure they'll enjoy it; Newport and the Kingston/URI area is very nice in the summer. Safety isn't a big issue around here, although obviously one would worry about a high schooler. URI should be pretty tame in the summer. It would be good to get a car though.
