I've noticed that many areas of providence are very affordable to live. I know some areas are also unsafe though. Are there any areas in particular that are maybe a little rough around the edges (and the prices reflect this) but are overall safe and maintain a sense of community. I have heard elmwood and mt pleasant may fall into this category, as well as the armory area in the west end and mt hope on the east side?

i drove through Silver Lake the other day. It ain't what it used to be, but it's not as bad
as the others you mentioned either. here, i threw this together for you.
i won't get into ethnic/"racial" place identification discussion, however.

Pretty impressive - you whipping this up... but What do the colors mean?
Is there a SE Asian strip or area of Providence/nearby towns?
Thanks

I didn't make the colors, just the comments in red. Of course, there are racial/ethnic
concentrations in various neighborhoods. I just don't feel comfortable discussing them
here, because to do so is controversial and inflammatory.

Wow, thanks so much for making that! Definitely a great reference for getting to know the city. I've got a couple weeks off from work coming up and I'm planning on doing a drive through the neighborhoods myself.

Is crime in those rougher areas generally criminals on criminals ? Is it easy to get along and stay out of trouble if you're friendly enough to everyone, keep quiet for the most part etc. or is there a culture of violence and exlusion towards outsiders?

Thanks again and if you do have any other information that may not be well received here please feel free to PM me because I am interested in all aspects of the city's culture not just the PC side of it.

I don't really understand how talking about cultural enclaves is controversial. I just want to know if there is an area/strip where I can get groceries, find restaurants, and Thai/Vietnamese people. Maybe I should start a new thread.. so the question still stands - is there an area like that in Providence?

just go to the Thai market on Chalkstone and ask them.

there is no one area for SE Asians, but there are plenty of Thai, Cambodian, Chineese, Korean, etc restaurants throughtout the city. Unfortunately no noodle shops. Some of the better ethnic restaurants are in areas some people on this forum would not venture. Chalkstone Ave near River Ave has a number of ethnic restuarants including Equadorean(?) and Guatamalan. If you are looking for an area with restaurants and some small shops try the Broadway area. No, it is not the East Side where you can go walking at midnight, but it is an area that has East Side type restauarants located there. A drive thru this area during the day would be a good idea. It has shown improvement in the last few years. Not necessarily a good place for families with children, but singles and young couples thrive there.

I wouldn't feel comfortable living in any of the areas I designated in a negative light.
What languages besides English are you fluent in ? that matters. There are enclaves
of demographic characteristics all over the city. What is your demographic ?

The Reservoir section of Providence, and the adjoining areas of Cranston and Elmwood probably have the highest concentration of SE Asians. It's still not the majority or anything like that (16% of the Reservoir population), but there are a lot of Asian markets in this area and the Southeast Asian Center is nearby on Elmwood.

Here's a site where you can click on neighborhoods and get census data.
