West Greenwich is rural; very attractive area (imo) plenty of farmland; no "downtown".

If you haven't done so already, you may want to also look at the areas that interest you via Google Earth: topography, land development spread and so forth. Use street views, bird's eye view, roads, look down as if in a plane and you can zoom in.

In a word, the difference is WATER. East Greenwich is a village located on and near Greenwich Bay and Narragansett Bay. West Greenwich is inland, rural in the woods. You get much more for your real estate dollar in the woods than near the water. Also, East Greenwich residents are higher income and the school system is considered amongst the best in the state. Both town are lovely for their type.

Commutability is a difference, too. East Greenwich is closer to the state's population centers, so no matter where you're commuting to work (if you're commuting at all), chances are good that West Greenwich is going to be a longer trip. I'm sure that weighs into the price difference.

I believe the Exeter/West Greenwich schools score pretty high as well. Used to work with a woman from there, and was very happy with the town/schools.

Put simply, East Greenwich has more appeal for the average family due to several nice amenities downtown, nice shopping districts, closer to everyday shopping centers, theaters, great restaurants, and importantly -- access to the best doctors in RI who have their satellite offices/practices there, but who work out of the hospitals in Prov.

The commute from West Greenwich isn't necessarily any worse than from East Greenwich; in fact, it can be better depending on the two locations in each town. West Greenwich has more exits off 95 than East Greenwich does, and less traffic on the surface roads leading to the exits.
