Before I moved here, I'd heard that people said "Wawwick" and honest to God, I didn't believe it. I thought it was an urban legend. The first time I really heard it I think my mouth dropped open.
Living in Warwick for a year was tough because I naturally want to say "Warwick" but was uncomfortable when people around me would say "Warrick." (I was actually OK with "Wawwick" because that's just "Warwick" in a thick Rhode Island accent.) After nine or so months, I resolved to make an effort to say "Warrick," but now that I don't live there anymore, I don't feel the same commitment, so I'm back to "Warwick," wrong as it may be.
It's funny how the RI accent has changed over my lifetime.
Still drives me crazy when I hear ads for the Warwick Mall...........emphasizing War-WICK.
I have two neighbors from RI in my subdivision (here in the backwater trailer-ridden south) One is from Wawwick, and the other from Pawtsmith which is near Newpawwt.
We recognized each other by the way we say cawwfee. "You're from where ? !"
What drives me nuts is people, born and bred here, who pronounce it "green witch" instead of "gren-itch"! AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!
Being from there there it's "worrick", btw....lol
