This is an interesting turn of events. First, Karen MacBeth, House Oversight Committee Chair, handed in her membership card for the Democratic Party and joined the Republicans. Mattiello promptly dismissed her as Chair of the House Oversight Committee. Well, we didn't want answers as to who was responsible for what in that 38 Studios thing anyway...

Within 24 hours, Michael Farina, Cranston City Councillor does the same thing.

Will this have any impact on the RI Democratic Party?

Doesn't every legislature in America assign committee chairmanships exclusively to members of the majority party (and independent members who caucus with them)?

I am generally not a supporter of enforcing ideological orthodoxy and branding politicians DINOs or RINOs. I like a big tent. That said, there are definitely Democrats in Rhode Island that make me think, What the hell, how is that person a Democrat? Peter Palumbo, who first came to my attention when he called atheist teenager Jessica Ahlquist "an evil little thing," is the best example. At first I thought, Well, he must be an old-fashioned ethnic populist type, socially conservative but big on labor. But when I looked closer, I couldn't really find any positions he held that couldn't easily get him elected to office in Mississippi or something.
