I am generally not a supporter of enforcing ideological orthodoxy and branding politicians DINOs or RINOs. I like a big tent. That said, there are definitely Democrats in Rhode Island that make me think, What the hell, how is that person a Democrat? Peter Palumbo, who first came to my attention when he called atheist teenager Jessica Ahlquist "an evil little thing," is the best example. At first I thought, Well, he must be an old-fashioned ethnic populist type, socially conservative but big on labor. But when I looked closer, I couldn't really find any positions he held that couldn't easily get him elected to office in Mississippi or something.
