I think it depends on what you want to do in the water.

Splash around with friends / throw a football back & forth? No wetsuit needed.

Go surfing, compete in triathlons, long-distance swim, kite boarding, etc. - most of my friends doing these activities insist on a wetsuit on all but the hottest days of the summer.

Oh, well, sure, I always see surfers wearing wetsuits. My wife surfs (very occasionally) and owns a wetsuit. But that's not what 95 percent of people are doing in the water.

Never mind going in the water, El Greco claimed it's too cold in July and August to even "sit pleasantly" at the beach... which is crazy, quite frankly.

the water temps have been hovering around 74 degrees since late June
