Hi, I'm planning to go to Moses Brown. I'm in the application process. And I'm trying really hard for a scholarship. I've heard rumors that there's a real bad drug problem at MB. Is it true?
Is Moses Brown REALLY a good school? Will I have a better chance/shot of getting into a good/ivy league college if I go to Moses Brown or an equal shot even if I go to public school?
Hi - well, I was a school counselor and teacher at another RI high school for 8 years, and we had kids come in from Moses Brown fairly regularly (whether due to a change in finances, or expulsion, or choosing to leave the MB community).
From what I heard from all my students, yes, there is a very active drug culture at MB. I heard some pretty shocking stories - and I believe the stories I heard (I can usually tell when a student is BSing me after all these years).
That being said, I heard the academics are excellent, and yes, many students go on to the Ivy League. Best of luck!

Thank you for replying!
I rencently experience a tour and a school day at Moses Brown and the students seemed fine. A little bratty and a little snotty, however I was unfazed. I go to a public school in a very wealthy town and the kids that attend the school are possibly the spoiled, worst well-manned, snot-nosed brats. My current high school was a huge drinking and drug problem, which the town pretends is not there.
But I bet, like you said, there are students that do recreational drugs. I just wonder how they got the students to behave for all the visitors that day.
I was wondering if you could let me in those stores you've heard, by the way?

I think that lots of drugs in affluent middle and high schools is typical in all American Schools. If that really bothers you, maybe you could research some Homeschooling options. Lots of Homeschooled kids get in many prestigious universities. Of course, you'd need a lot of support from your family as they would need to have a curriculum that would be approved by the state. Lastly, you could get your GED and start taking Community college classes. Again, it really depends on the support of your family. God Bless and Good Luck to you!
My parents own a small business and are almost too busy in dealing with it. Since the economy currently stinks in RI, they are trying very hard to improve their sales.
They work there almost everyday and spend most their time to generate some kind of income, which is really impossible.
They are old, tired, and busy with their business. Both of my parents are very intelligence but they don't have they don't have the energy or time to home school me. That would have been great!
I guess I just got to deal with it and say no and stay above the influence.
It really stinks being a teenager in the States. Just remember, its only for a little while then you can go to college and be somewhere YOU want to be. Spend your time looking forward to that and don't limit your options. There is one CityData user who is 14 and wants to go to Alaska. Maybe you'd want to research, I dunno, New Mexico State in Las Cruses. The point is to look forward and consider your time now to learn how to handle the dopey people you will encounter all through your life. Too bad we can't use the Ignore Button in real life. God Bless and Good Luck-Leighland
If you go to school in Barrington, you will probably feel right at home in the MB community, in many ways. With that being said, if you go to Barrington, I'm not sure why you would feel the need to go to Moses Brown for academics...BHS has several students getting accepted and going to the Ivies every year, with many more going to elite schools that aren't actually in the Ivy League (Georgetown, John Hopkins, Boston College, Boston University, etc). I'm guessing there is a strong chance you live in Barrington based on your description of the community, although I might be wrong.
At any rate, remember that 1. there is a lot more to choosing the right college than just the ranking (this is advice coming from someone with 3 degrees from prestigious schools) and 2. you can certainly get into the Ivy League no matter what high school you go to - it depends on your motivation and achievement.
I actually live in EG. My brother went/graduated from EG High school and I have a couple of friends who go to EGHS. According to them, their experience at the school was unsatisfactory.
The school is old and hasn't been remodeled. No books for bio. The equipment is old. The technology is old. The textbooks are old. The teachers are okay, I guess.
