I am considering moving to Providence and I wonder if you can help me decide on a neighborhood.

I would love either a cool loft or an older 'cool', as in a bit interesting architecturally, home that I can perhaps even do the finishing touches to myself. I am open to both renting and buying.

I want to walk to and from restaurants and shops, and when I have had a few I would like to be able to walk home safely!

A brisk +/-20 minutes to get to the restaurants and shops is no problem. I also like being able to walk around my neighborhood both for exercise and relaxation, looking at houses and people, enjoying myself. So, in other words it should be relatively safe and a nice looking area. A little bit of nature wouldn't hurt either, as in maybe a park or two. Also, being able to ride my bike for exercise in the area or to restaurants etc would be great. Ideally at least one grocery store within walking distance would be good.

My partner and I are both in our mid 30's and since we do not know many people in RI a friendly neighborhood would be great! We do not have kids and do not, yet, want to be in an all family area, but we are on the other hand way too old for the party scene and prefer a calmer environment.

Wayland Square is a nice neighborhood on the East Side with lots of restaurants and shops. It's safe and semi-suburban with a lot of nice houses around. I think there's a grocery store nearby, but it's sort of an upscale market rather than an everyday grocery.

Wayland Square has a small Whole Foods and Eastside Marketplace. Eastside Marketplace has great meats and prepared foods, and their prices on most other things are comparable to Stop & Shop.

East Side seems like a perfect fit for you. I agree with the other posters. Wayland Square is a nice neighborhood with most things in close proximity.
