Thanks for posting the article. I'm wondering, though, why you seem to be surprised and/or excited about Classical. It has always been one of the top schools.

Because the fact that Classical is located on the southside of Providence may surprise others who are not accustomed to hearing good news about the area here.

But it's not a South Providence school. People from all over the city go there, and you need to apply and take an entrance exam.

Regardless, Classical High School is located in South Providence. The 3 top public high schools in Rhode Island are located in South Providence, Barrington & East Greenwich.

While that statement is accurate, it's also terribly misleading.

Nothing misleading. That perhaps the best public high school in Rhode Island is located in a challenged urban neighborhood is a fact. Another interesting fact is, according to the Public School Review, the minority enrollment is 75%. Parents seeking a good college preparatory education & a diverse social environment gravitate to Classical.

I don't think anybody has ever questioned their outstanding academic reputation. But the unfortunate reality is, it is located within a troubled campus in a pretty rough neighborhood. A year or two ago, a student was shot on random leaving school. Wasn't looking for trouble, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and caught gang related crossfire. As stellar a school Classical is, that is a very real issue parents need to contend with. And please don't waste your breath with "a shooting can happen in Barrington as well...".

^^^^^^
I'm sure parents will take your recollection "from a year or two ago" into account. As well as your evaluation of the neighborhood.

OK one year two months, if that level of precision is that important. I'm sure the parents of the deceased boy are just befuddled by those lack of details. Here is the story:
