I don't believe people are homeless because of housing shortages, people chose not to be sheltered.
Maybe some are this way, although I doubt most are homeless out of choice. I think most homeless are on the streets due to addictions and/or poor life decisions. It's not as if there's cheap or free housing for all. That's one of the points of this thread.

There is a lot more to "homelessness" than street junkies at Kennedy plaza or staying at Crossroads. There is the larger (and harder to see) issue of people couch surfing with friends and family and no permanent place to go. Or living in weekly hotel rentals. We will likely see more of that, as housing becomes more scarce and cost prohibitive to more.
Ha ha ha. Talk about jealousy. FYI: I am well travelled and have lived in many other states. RI has been my state of choice for decades.
I see neither of you had anything cogent or relevant to contribute. I wish someone besides IM would have a real comment to make.
I think you'd receive far more replies to your posts if each and every one didn't include a gushing reference to your property values "ticking up". You've sorely underestimated your fellow Rhode Islanders if you think they care. The vast majority here are experiencing the same skyrocketing home appreciation or more, though with so many frozen out, struggling or homeless, the rest of us possess the sense to keep it under our hat. Free advice lady? When you get to the end zone, act like you've been there before.

I imagine you're right in terms of renters. The article said that some are offering higher rent than asked.
I've read that college students have had a very difficult time finding off-campus housing. Some searching for months.
What's not clear to me is if it's citywide. I mean, are they having a difficult time because they've focused only on the usual desirable areas? Is it actually difficult to get an apartment in places like South Providence or Olneyville / Silver Lake / Hartford?
Traditionally, Rhode Island is at or near the bottom for per capita housing starts, so it's primarily a shuffle of existing homes. And it's almost a certainty that Rhode Islanders bailing out are heading South and West for lower taxes and milder winters. And jobs if they need one. And in all honesty concerning those moving in from other states, please don't fear them. Yes they may be different, but they mean you no harm. They come from different lands with different ways, and bring with them strange and exotic customs. Welcome them and above all, learn from them.
And some of us are coming back to NE from these warm, low taxed, but very disturbing states like FL and AZ because of the lack of culture and character.

Exactly. Although you'd never guess it from all the down and out naysayers on this forum.
