"The Rhode Island Department of Education has released its Report Card on the performance of schools in the state.
As part of the assessment, each school is given a star "accountability" ranking, with 5 stars being the best. SEE ALL SCHOOL RANKINGS HERE
And, no school's ranking was more significant than the collapse of Classical High School, which was considered the gem of the Providence School system and often tapped as the best school in Rhode Island on national lists.
Before the State of Rhode Island’s takeover of Providence schools and COVID, Classical was a 5-star school."
A close friend of mine has spent 27 years working as a teacher and administrator in the field of high school and collegiate education. Just over two years ago he was contacted regarding an opportunity at Classical High School. He and I met for lunch shortly after he'd taken the meeting and I'll never forget his reaction to the experience. He came away convinced that the long-revered institution was beginning to coast on its reputation. He said that the school's physical plant desperately needed work, its ELA curriculum struck him as less than robust, and the interview he'd been subjected to struck him as "cursory, at best". When he was subsequently offered a position at the school, he politely declined.
One hopes that the Rhode Island Department of Education's Report Card rankings serve as a wake-up call for the administration, faculty, and staff at Classical High School.

I agree. Just a few decades ago, Classical was considered on par with Moses Brown as one of the two best high schools in the state. To say it has fallen is an understatement.
Seven indicators are used to calculate the overall star rating.
Like Classical, North Kingstown High School rated 2 stars, despite earning 5 points out of 5 possible points on 5 out of the 7 indicators.
Meanwhile, Barrington High School and East Greenwich High School rated 5 stars overall, despite indicator rankings nearly identical to Classical and North Kingstown. Barrington and East Greenwich earned 5 points on 6 indicators, versus to 5 points on 5 indicators for Classical and North Kingstown.
All 4 schools ranked 1 point out of 5 on the English Language Proficiency indicator.
However, the 1 point on English Language Proficiency was counted in overall star rating calculation for Classical and North Kingstown, but not for Barrington and East Greenwich, for whom the English Language Proficiency indicator was simply excluded from the overall star rating calculation due to "not enough information to score that indicator, such as having too few students for that indicator."
Oddly, Block Island School had enough information to score English Language Proficiency, but East Greenwich and Barrington did not.
Here are the Classical details. Five stars in five categories, four stars in a sixth category, and two stars in English Language Proficiency. This is identical to North Kingstown High School.
