"A preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was traveling on Pontiac Avenue when a male subject flagged him down.
When he stopped, the suspect pulled him from his vehicle and violently assaulted him, according to police. The suspect fled the area in the stolen vehicle with a female subject."
This happened at about 6:00 AM near 133 Pontiac Ave in Cranston. That's very close to the Reservoir neighborhood in Providence.
Note: While the incident clearly happened in Cranston, it was important that the proximity to the disfavored Reservoir neighborhood of Providence had to be highlighted by this one. They never fail to try to broad brush trash neighborhoods - even when the crime happens elsewhere.

It's likely "spillover" crime, and an example of why I constantly tell people to avoid buying in areas of Cranston bordering Providence ie. most areas north of Park Ave..
When we hear about situations like this, I can't help but wonder if the victim was looking to buy drugs or looking for a prostitute. I mean, why would you pull over at 6:00 AM for someone "flagging" you down?

Seriously? An old boomer like this (note: I'm an old boomer myself) probably just thought someone needed help and stopped to see what the problem was. We can be naive that way, having grown up in a simpler era!

Blame the victim. Nice going.
