My wife and I have been looking for apartments online and will be heading to town for a few days to look in person. I posted earlier about utilities, especially heating, but I've come across steam or water-based heating systems in a few places. Does anyone have any experience with this, as to the efficiency and/or cost, as compared to gas or oil? This was the first I'd heard of this type of heating. Would the water bill be outrageous? Thanks for any help!!
I have steam heat fueled by gas. It works well. Generally, you will get old fashioned radiators with this type of heating. It doesn't affect your water bill much (will you even pay water in a rental?) and is a good time tested method of heating. Many like it because it is not as drying for the house or sinuses as forced air.
Oh, I see, powered by gas. Ok, that makes more sense then. Yeah in some of the pictures I see the old fashioned radiators.
It can also be fueled by oil. Steam heat or forced hot water is a very common type of heating in New England. Especially in older housing that was converted from coal.

We have steam - a concept that I found a bit unusual when I moved to MA as previously I'd only come across forced hot water when it came to radiators. The problem with steam is that the radiators seem to cool down much more quickly when the boiler shuts off and if the valves on each radiator aren't set just right the steam doesn't circulate around the system properly so I often get random cold rooms in the winter.
But I still much prefer it to forced air though, although I'd kill for central air in the summer!
Hmm, the relief valves? I just replaced those on my radiators, I got them from a plumber (Steve's Heating) in Tiverton. Not sure where you'd get those otherwise. Maybe a good hardware store? Give Mercier's in Warren a call maybe?
I am looking for a retailer that might carry the relief valves that go on each radiator
I just had all of mine replaced a few weeks ago. You should be able to find them at any decent hardware store...at least that's what my plumber told me.
