Hey Guys!

I lived in Texas all my life. I am taking a new position in May and have to move to Rhode Island.

Never been to RI before. Can anyone suggest me a good neighborhood and some apartment complex to stay?

My job is at Cranston, RI. So I need a place that is close by and at the same time closer to all the stores and of course the mall

Any help, advice is great help.

Thanks,

Rachel

By mall do you mean the Garden City Mall?

If so anything named Garden City or Dean Estates would be good & convenient. Look at ApartmentsRated.com

Default Moving to Rhode Island

Holly:

Mall is really not my priority . That was just to state the things that I like to have close by.

But my priority is safe neighborhood with the grocery stores close by and less commute time to work.

So..is Garden still good?

Thanks, Rachel

Cranston is a densely populated town; BIG change from Texas. Some parts aren't so nice, just old urban RI, some are fine. Lots of older apartment complexes around. The Edgewood, Pawtuxet area is nice more single family though. Garden City is probably the only newer developed area, probably what you'd like if its in your price range, near mall, a brand new Whole Foods. Everything will be convenient anywhere in this part of RI, more or less. I would definitely consider Warwick too though, overall nicer parts.

The density will depend on where in Texas she is coming from. There are some mighty big cities in Texas. Rent prices in the big cities will be comparable to RI although you probably won't get as many amenities in the apartment for your money since our housing tends to be older.

Cranston & Warwick, although cities, are bedroom communities of Providence.

Terrasurf prefers W, I prefer C! No accounting for tastes. I concur about amenities, there are malls & shopping everywhere- some say too much.

The Garden City and Dean estates areas are fine. Unless you really like apartment complexes, try looking on Craigslist for rentals.

From what I saw in Austin, all the neighborhoods were pretty much as spacious as Blackstone Boulevard. I'll be they don't have multi-family homes with apartments like we do here. There are some nice ones around Pawtuxet Village.

Rachel, your profile zip code is listed as 02920, which is Cranston, not Texas. Have you already moved? I agree with both above posters concerning both Warwick and Cranston. Depending on where in Cranston you will be working, you will be just a few minutes from the Garden City Mall, although I wouldn't exactly call it a mall - it's not an all in one building, but an older mall with individual buildings set out around a huge parking area. Don't get me wrong, I like it. You will also be a VERY short bus ride from the 2 Warwick Malls and, of course, Providence Place Mall which is a huge new mall right in downtown Providence with mostly upscale stores and a big cinema.

But you don't need a mall for shopping anywhere in Cranston or Warwick as stores abound on all the main streets.

Hey, there are only so many big cities in Texas. I am guessing things in Dallas/FW, where I briefly was too, are even bigger. And if she comes from some little town, well.....welcome to RI. Texan's live large and comfortable, and barely seem to survive without all things Texas, for one. I'm sure you can agree RI and Cranston, are a huge change, that's all I'm sayin.....

Hi Rachel,

Both Garden City and Dean Estates are nice. One nice thing about RI is you don't really need to live in the city you are working in to be close to it. I work in Cranston, but live in Johnston. It takes me less than 20 minutes to get to the office.

It really depends on what you would prefer. Do you need to have a place lined up before you move? Obviously it would be best to be able to look around before you find a place.

Good luck.
