Hi group,

We went to register our 8 year old for 3rd grade in a new school (recently moved). The office said they require a copy of our deed! I told them we will show them a copy, but they cannot retain one for their records. Now we have to wait for the senior administrator to come next week and get this cleared up.

Anyone else dealing with this???

We had to do the same when we moved (to Henrico Co). They will likely need it for their records in case the state or maybe even federal government decide to check and make sure only citizens are crowding up our schools. Maybe you can request to have it returned to you when your child leaves the school?

We moved from one residence in Henrico to another and I had to prove we were still in the same elementary school boundary. They asked to see the deed, but did not keep it.

I would just let them have a copy. They have copies of your child's birth certificate and immunization shots which also has their social security number...small price in the big scheme of things...

Aren't deeds public records anyway? I can't see where any harm could come to you by them keeping a copy of it. They just want to have proof on file they verified you are actually a resident. I know I had to show mine but I don't think they kept it, maybe they made a copy I don't remember. Honestly, I think anyone could go to the county and get a copy of it.

The deed/rental agreement proves your eligability to attend school in the district. It is retained in your childs record and is not used for any other purpose.
