Hello, I am looking for input, I will be moving from NJ to VA soon and I know nothing about VA and would like as much input as possible!

key points:

-I would like to live in the 'country' setting
-I have a child so school quality is important to me
-Safety! I'm a single mother and I don't know anyone in VA so I would like to feel safe lol!
-Cheap is always good!

So I will be moving to VA I'm aiming for Richmond area and I just really need to know where the best place to start would be! Any input on towns to look into would be greatly appreciated! thank you!

We are also moving to the richmond area this summer and have young kids so schools are important. We have found that the west side of Chesterfield county (Midlothian area), and the western side of Henrico county have good schools and nice rentals. In Chesterfield, we are looking for areas that feed into either Cosby HS or Midlothian HS, as these seem to have the best scores. In Henrico, I found that schools that feed into Godwin HS have good scores. Hope this helps!

CM320RN is right, the counties are best for those with children and who are looking for affordability. There are a ton of townhouse and apartment communities throughout the three biggest counties that surround Richmond, Chesterfield, Henrico, and Hanover. US News and World Report is a good place to go for school ratings and all three counties have nationally top ranked schools systems. Some are better than others and it would be my goal to find an affordable apt. in one of these higher rated school pockets. Since these counties are large ( there are no "towns" to speak of in the traditional New England sense that surround Richmond, it is all counties) counties, there are many school systems within all of them. Hanover is farther out but has the "country" feel you might be most drawn to. Goochland County is also about 20-30 mins outside the city and offers a rural feel as well. Best wishes!

Petersburg would not satisfy your need for safety, good schools or country setting

I would recommend sticking with areas noted if looking for best schools. I would throw James River High School into the mix as well.

For a lower price and decent schools you could check the Chesterfield area - there are some nice areas there as well near Beach Rd. etc.

I recommend Midlothian - I like the Midlo Turnpike / Charter Colony / Robious Rd. area as Hull Street area is pretty congested.

Hanover. Ashland. Definitely country setting. Decent schools and affordability.
