The COL seems to be less in Richmond area than F'burg.

Are there trees, rolling hills around Richmond? It's also closer to Williamsburg, V Beach coastal towns (when I have to have my water fix).
There are plenty of trees, rolling hills, pastures, etc!!!

I also did consider Richmond for retirement, and the Midlothian and Brandermill areas were high on the list. Housing prices are good, but I did not find any 55+ communities such as there are in Williamsburg and Fredericksburg.

We eventually settled on Coastal NC, because the husband wanted to fish every day.

If you don't mind my asking, where were you living before you retired to NC?

Silver Spring, MD. It's a good place to make a living, bit not enjoyable. We also lived in Chesterfield County and Petersburg for about 4 years total.

Can someone give me the address of that cute shopping area in Midlothian that's in the CNBC article?

We're visiting Midlothian this weekend and I'm not sure what to look at and see.

Any suggestions welcome!

Fun restaurants?
Fun libraries (fun meaning pretty architecture, good selection of books etc.)
fun pool

anything.

Thanks!

Alley

Sycamore Square - Sycamore Square Shopping Village

Libraries are pretty plain vanilla around here physically - great books and programs etc - but no pretty architecture - the only one I can think of that fits that bill is in the city.

Fun pool - depends on your needs and budget - the Y is good, ACAC is lots of fun and great for families, MAC is popular...there is Salisbury Country Club..

There isn't a ton to do/see here, it is a quiet area although very convenient. If you like hustle and bustle this isn't for you.

Ooh - one place to take your kids - Packard's "Stamps and Rocks" - right on Midlothian Tpke - in front of the new American Family - Packard's Rock Shop in Midlothian, VA - YellowBot
This is our favorite place to go - step back in time - it is awesome. My daughter is 6 and this is her favorite place ever - she has a whole collection of $1.00 rocks...

Sycamore Square is really attractive--it's a shame that more of Midlothian Village isn't co-ordinated with it. Is there even a Town Council or some such which could enforce anything like that? I know it's hard (or impossible) to legislate design though. The Arby's just down the street is something to marvel at. Not many fast-food joints could ever be said to fit that description. Midlothian Village seems like about 50% attractive--buildings people really made an effort with--and the other 50% just random crap like strip malls or whatever's cheapest & easiest. Like most places.

After (or instead of) Crab Louie's, try Pescados. It's very informal but amazing food. My friend said "Ten or twenty years ago you had to dress up to eat food like this!"

If Chesterfield County had any foresight, they would have worked to create a nice village area anchoring Midlothian. Really give the place an identity. Too late...
