Yay! I wonder if they know that half the shops in that Sycamore Square strip are vacant, though.

OK, I went to Martins tonight and actually counted - there are what 4-5 vacancies among the 30 or so stores - so yes a few but still a vibrant shopping center. Most of the vacancies are the smaller spots. This article
was a nice plus for Midlothian!

I'll be retiring soon and have always wanted to relocate to Virginia. My 1st choice (Leesburg) is now out of my COL range so I was thinking of suburbs of Richmond. That way I could travel in all directions depending on where I wanted to visit in Virginia. It seems pretty centrally located. How does Midlothian area compare to Fredericksburg? I haven't been too impressed with Fredericksburg from the little I've been able to gather from the internet. My other choice would be Chesapeake area. Charlottesville seems too far out in the middle of nowhere for me.

thanks for your help!

What is it about Fredericksburg that doesn't appeal to you. Charlottesville is a wonderful place to retire. It's only about 45-1 hour from Richmond. The COL is higher, though. What kind of environment are you looking for? Urban? Country? What amenities.

I realize this is from this past fall, but SparrowGirl I don't know what you mean half the stores are vacant? I do quite of bit of shopping at Sycamore and maybe 2 or 3 stores don't have tenants. The rest of the center is full.
I love that place. It reminds me of this shopping center where I used to live in Connecticut. That quaint colonial look.
I love Midlothian overall.

It's been fuller for the past year or so, but a lot of the tenents don't make it more than a year or two.

I'm looking for upscale suburban near mid-size urban city. I'm definitely not a rural type of person. Fredericksburg seems like very small town center with more suburban sprawl but I could be wrong. I know they have Wegmans there and that company does research its locations well. Of course, I want to visit Fredericksburg, Richmond and Raleigh areas eventually to see for myself. The COL seems to be less in Richmond area than F'burg.

Are there trees, rolling hills around Richmond? It's also closer to Williamsburg, V Beach coastal towns (when I have to have my water fix).
