I know, I know, "non cheesy" and "dance spot" might seem like an oxymoron, but I'm looking for a place to head out with my wife after a romantic dinner. We're early 40s, delude ourselves by thinking we're younger, and once were pretty hip, but alas now we're just parents. So I'm looking to avoid the college crowd, but also avoid the gold-chain sporting, dragon-shirt wearing, typical 40 something crowd too. Any suggestions for that sweet spot? Something downtown/fan/carytown would be best.

RICHMOND.......FUGHETTABOTIT....sorry to disappoint you. You just have to do like the rest of use over 35 transplant crowd and realize Richmond has nothing to offer us. Rent a movie from red box and wait for soccer practice to be over...LOL Every know and then you might want to splurge and drive to VA beach, Chesapeake area.

The Hat Factory can be fun. I'm 40 and I've been dancing there and I didn't feel like that much of an old fogey. But check to see what kind of dance night they are having.

Here's a link that may send you in the right direction:

Richmond VA Nightlife Directory of Restaurants, Bars, Entertainment, Bands, Hotels

Maybe Cullen's Cove in Mechanicsville may suite you.

As to the Hat Factory, a picture is a thousand words

Clubs aren't my thing... but to be fair to Hat Factory they had different themes on different nights of the week and so the crowd changes. I say had because it is now called Epic Theater.

I am 53 and my Gfriend is 48. We go to Midway lounge on Thursday or Friday nights when they have a certain band. You might want to make sure what band is playing before you go. Check out Casper bands website. Also The Janitors website. They also play at other events that you might enjoy...we do.

Off the Hookah on Saturdays you see an "older/Upscale" crowd as most of the college students go on Thursdays. Atleast in my observation...

I was wondering about this myself. I just had a friend in town and we had some trouble finding the right spot to hang out at in the city. Now I wish we had gone into Off the Hookah Sat. night like we thought about. Weren't sure if it was another super-young crowd so we unfortunately skipped it. Richmond needs a few more nightspots for the 35+ crowd. I'm a parent and "soccer mom" but I still love to have fun and kick back for a few drinks on the town once in awhile!

I may be going this Friday so I can give feedback on the crowd there as I have only been there on Thursdays and Saturdays. Saturdays the "younger" crowd tend to flock downstairs to the Hat Factory while the "older" crowd (this is from observation) stays at Off the Hookah. Thursdays at OTH is Ladies Night so you tend to see the college crowd there on that night as oppose to Saturday. Give it a shot! Doesn't hurt..
