Hi All! I am about to move to Glen Allen from Los Angeles. Do I need to get a 4-wheel/All-wheel drive vehicle for the winter? Will a corolla/camry work fine?

From a northerners perspective there's no such thing as winter in Richmond. Any sort of Toyota is fine. Richmond is in the south.

When Richmond gets a heavy snowfall or bad ice storm, people stay home. A good set of all season tires will get you through winter in a Camry/Corolla with no problem. Even a dusting of snow can be a problem for summer or high performance tires, though I'm guessing you don't have those on a Camry.

If you want to head to the mountains frequently in the winter, then 4wd or AWD might be helpful.

If most of your time will be spent living and working in Henrico, then no. For those of us that have AWD/4x4 its more a necessity as one travels from one county to another as they are not consistently cleared (nor are subdivision neighborhoods) within the first two days of a snowstorm.

It is also tradition to run to the store for milk, bread and toilet paper whenever the "s" word is mentioned. Don't know why but ever body does. Also plan to buy a new snow shovel each time, for whatever reason people seem to need a new one each time it snows.

Sorry I just couldn't resist and the Toyota will be fine for what we get ....

Everyone where I live drives gargantuan 4WD SUVs but it has nothing to do with snow (which we very seldom see). Rather it's a game of one-upsmanship whereby you lose if your SUV is smaller than the neighbors'.

No one seems to realize that it's a zero-sum game...

Ironically, I was once told no supermarket in Richmond has ever been closed for snow... Friends call it French toast time, it's all that can be happening with all that leftover milk, eggs, and bread.

I drove a Honda civic in the Colorado Rockies for 2 years. In Richmond snow, a civic will serve you fine. Except for the fact the locals have no clue how to drive in snow (or rain) - they are genuinely dangerous, not the pitiful level of snow we get.

I always tell my wife to be happy, as that bad driving is a testament to how generally good the weather is here. No one gets exposed to bad weather enough to learn how to drive in it...

Its also amazing that in all the cities I've driven thru on I-81/I-95/I-64, the most one car accidents I've seen is in the Richmond metro area.

FWIW the born locals don't drive much better on dry pavement either.

Also FYI stopping for red lights, stopping for stop signs, signaling are all optional.

Turning on your head lights at night is also optional.
